SCCS Programme:
Meeting - 6 July 2023 7.30pm
3 Techniques Evening
PROGRAMME - from September 2023
The Meetings
An additional three afternoon meetings are to be trialed - in addition to the established monthly evening meetings.
From September to November there will be two meetings a month:
Evening meetings are on the first Thursday of the month -
7th September, 5th October and 2nd November
With an earlier starting time of 7pm until 9pm.
Afternoon meetings - Tuesdays from 2-4pm
Tuesday 19th September, Tuesday 17th October and Tuesday 21st November
A festive meeting at 7pm on Thursday 7th December
Zoom Meetings with textile artists and authors, at 7:30pm on -
Thursday 4th January, with Wendy Dolan, giving an illustrated talk about her inspirations, development of designs and techniques to completed pieces.
Thursday 1st February 2024, a mini-workshop with Angie Hughes, focusing on the theme of ‘Gold’ in celebration of 50 years of a creative stitching group in Sutton Coldfield.
Evening meetings from 7:00pm on Thursday 7th March and Thursday 4th April 2024
The exhibition will be taking place from 1st-4th May 2024 so there will be no Thursday evening meeting in May.
The AGM will take place on Thursday 6th June at 7:00pm. At which time we will also evaluate the revised programme format.
The final meeting of the year will be on Thursday 4th July at 7:00pm.
The Format
At each meeting -
In the centre of the room will be the area for hand stitching and slow stitching.
Around the edge of the room there will be separate tables and areas for machine embroidery, fabric printing, creative techniques such as working with bondaweb and dissolvables, etc.
Specialist tools and materials will be provided for you to have a go at techniques you might not otherwise have come across.
We ask that members let us know which techniques they would like to be on offer.
Instruction sheets and samples of things which can be made, embroidered and embellished will be available - for you to make for yourself or for sale at the exhibition - including needle cases, rice bags, sewing kits, book and journal covers, tote bags, etc.
Resources
Specialist materials and tools for techniques will be provided.
In September each member will be given a starter pack of basic materials, including calico, wadding, transfer-painted paper and appropriate fabric, and small pieces of experimental fabrics.
We are asking for donations to start a group ‘stash’ for use by all members. We would particularly welcome threads of all sorts, unusual fabrics, and embellishments.
The rationale
A dwindling membership, escalating speaker fees and expenses, and increased room rental charges necessitated a radical review of the programme format.
The consultation with the membership earlier this year elicited overwhelming support for practical, activity-based meetings, which allow for more of an opportunity to socialise.
The belief that there’s a wealth of experience and expertise within the membership that could be more widely shared.
The intention to provide tools and specialist materials for members to experiment with textile art and creative stitchery techniques, should they wish. But it’s to be stressed that members are free to bring their own work, with no expectation to take part in any of the other activities.
An opportunity for members to produce work to exhibit and sell during this exhibition year.
WORKSHOPS
It was agreed at the EGM that workshops will now be arranged when sufficient interest in a subject matter is expressed. We are however in the fortunate position as a longstanding group that the workshop room rental will not be subject to increase - but it is a case of ‘use it or lose it’ and it would be a pity not to continue with workshops.
Our most recent, fascinating and remarkably good-value for money workshop - Heat Press Botanical Printing - was well attended and very successful. Photographs are available on Instagram and our Facebook page.
A number of members have asked for a Nuno-felting workshop by Caroline Lindsay. A provisional-sign up sheet will be available from July, with the aim of putting on the workshop in the autumn.
